DIVERSITY
2006-present
The idea for the DIVERSITY series came about on a trip back home to Michigan last fall. I enjoyed where I grew up, but Saginaw is a working town with real people and consequently real problems. One of which is having the dubious distinction of annually being one of the most segregated cities per capita in the country. When my wife and I were visiting we sat down with the Saginaw Art Museum Curator of exhibitions and talked about ideas for a show. My original idea was to paint a few hundred squares of color and fill the space of the museum’s walls with colors-all different. These different colors welcome, depend on and work with one another side by side to create a vibrant image of DIVERSITY and unity. Not one painting would be exactly the same and all would rely on one another to work as a whole. I began painting them as soon as I returned and continue to paint the series today. |
